Our professional spider treatment generally focuses on the external areas of the building, as spiders typically live outside (where they can catch insects). We carry out a comprehensive spray to the external perimeter of the house, including the eaves, doors and windows, and other entry points. We will also treat fences, pergolas, play equipment and outbuildings as required. Only if spiders are found inside we will also spray cornices and if spiders are in the roof void, we will dust with insecticide powder.

When it comes to spider treatments and how they work, it is important to understand the difference between web-building spiders and hunting (running) spiders, that don’t build webs.

The black house spider and redback spider are the two main spiders that build webs around buildings. These spiders are relatively easy to kill – you know where they are (you can see their web) and they can be prevented from building webs by treating the surface with a residual insecticide.

Hunting spiders don’t build webs but rather catch their prey by running after them or ambushing them. The two main hunting spiders in Perth are the white-tailed spider and huntsman spiders. This makes them more difficult to control as, unless they are sprayed directly, control is reliant on the spiders walking across treated surfaces. In addition, when they walk, they tend to walk on the tips of their legs, which limits the amount of insecticide they pick up. Although they generally die after walking on a treated surface, it may take some time.

However, a spider treatment also has an indirect impact on hunting spiders. The spider spray to the exterior of the building will not only kill any redbacks and black house spiders present but also kill a range of other insects. By eliminating the potential food sources for hunting spiders (incidentally white tail spiders like eating black house spiders), hunting spiders will find the property less attractive and move elsewhere to search for food.

Very very happy with company. I rung and didn't leave a msg, but got a prompt text msg asking me if they could help with anything. Advised my mice issue and was happy with the clear pricing and details of what they could do. Following day I got in touch & confirmed I wanted to go ahead, they could fit me in the following day! Which when you have mice the sooner the better right! The service gentleman came, and I was totally happy with his customer service also. So 10/10 to this company

Since the last treatment from Megatec Pest Control, we barely had any insects, spiders or other pests at our house. The treatment works well! We used Megatec Pest Control services again for our annual pest treatment at our house. Just like last time, their service was excellent! José and his team made sure to treat every area of our house, even hard to reach places. Thanks. We will use you again!

Thank you Jo and Tania! We have had you perform our pest treatment the last couple of years and each visit has been amazing! You do exactly what you say you will do and your prices are very competitive. I have recommended you to friends and will continue to do so. Thanks again, Fiona

Any spiders hit by the initial treatment will be dead within an hour and you are likely to see additional spiders dead on the ground the following morning, as spiders will have emerged from their hiding places and been exposed to the treated surfaces.

The residual surface treatment will continue working for several months (up to 6 months in sheltered areas, less in exposed area), killing any spiders crossing the surface and preventing web-building spiders building their webs.

The easiest way to get rid of spider webs is to just use a broom. However, we prefer to leave spider webs in place before a treatment. Firstly, it shows us where the spider is hiding and secondly, we treat the webs with insecticide, so any hiding spiders will contact the insecticide when they emerge.

After a professional spider treatment, we always suggest leaving the webs in place for 2-3 days to make sure any hiding spiders contact the insecticide. The webs can then be removed with a broom. Don’t wash them down, as this also washes away the treatment.

Yes, huntsman spiders can bite, but they don’t bite very often. Huntsmans are actually quite a timid spider and will tend to run away. However, a female guarding her egg case can be aggressive. Bites only really occur by accident if trapped of if picked up. Their bite is quite mild (not dangerous). Follow standard spider bite first aid if bitten.

White tail spiders are considered quite dangerous as they deliver a painful and venomous bite. Although their bite is painful it does not cause flesh to decay (as urban myths suggest). There is nothing in their venom that can cause flesh to decay. Follow standard spider bite first aid if bitten.

To prevent spiders in the house, you need to prevent spider problems development outside the house. Apart from having a professional spider treatment to get rid of spiders and their prey, there are a couple of preventative actions you can take:

  • Trim back vegetation from around the perimeter of the building. Better still, remove garden beds and use pebbles with plants in pots.
  • Trim back bushes and trees from the sides of paths, to prevent webs being built across paths.
  • Make sure all windows and doors have well fitted window screens.
Black House Spider

The black house spider and similar grey house spider are up to 30mm long (including legs). They are a dark mottled black / grey spider. They build dense funnel shaped webs around sheltered positions, such as doors, windows and under eaves. Their bite is moderately painful. If bitten follow standard spider bite first aid.

Redback spider

Female redback spiders are a black glossy spider with a leg span of up to 40 mm. They have a characteristic red strip on the abdomen. Their webs are a very messy structure (s bit like a poorly made fishing net), often incorporating debris, such as dead leaves. They live in dry locations, such as under rocks and logs, in weep holes, in the tubes of hollow tubular metal fencing and around down lights. Their bite is painful. Apply standard spider bite first aid and seek medical attention if the victim is very young, old, suffering from another medical condition or has a severe reaction to the bite.

White Tailed Spider

White-tail spiders are a distinct looking spider. They have a thin, dark, cigar shaped body, with 4 white dots in a square formation on the abdomen, with and additional white spot at the end of the abdomen (the white ‘tail’). They have dark and light brown striped legs. Their leg span is up to 28 mm. They are found under bark, rocks and logs and so love squeeze under clothes and sheets. Their favourite prey are black house spiders! Their bite is quite painful and standard spider bite first aid should be applied. There is no evidence that white tailed spider bites cause flesh to decay.

Huntsman spider

There are a number of different huntsman spiders in Perth. They are all large spiders, with the leg span of the largest species being up to 150 mm. The various species have very different colourations, but all tend to be grey and browns, often with stripes or a mottled colouration. They live under rocks and logs where their flattened body shape is useful. It also allows them to squeeze under doors and sheets! They are not aggressive and generally do not bite. They bite is consider only mildly painful and standard spider bite first aid should be applied.

Standard spider bite first aid:

  • Keep the victim calm and still
  • Clean the bite area with disinfectant
  • Apply an ice pack to treated area

If the victim is very young, old, suffering from another medical condition or has a severe reaction to the bite, seek medical attention.

If the spider is suspected to be a funnel web (not present in Perth) or mouse spider, the funnel-web bite first aid should be applied. This is similar to snake bite first aid, where a pressure bandage is applied. It is then important to seek medical attention immediately.
